A Good Start

Well that was a good start. Right after I published my first blog (I hate that term), my mother fell and broke her neck. She broke her C1 and C2 vertebra, and for those of you who are counting, that’s a bad thing. This often leads to death if the spinal cord is damaged. She also received a nice gash to her forehead.

Fortunately she had no nerve damage and is expected to fully recover, or as much as you can at 85 years of age.

It did however highlight the fact that, with the age my parents have reached, when everything is OK their life just idles along, but if anything at all goes wrong, they are basically unable to care for themselves. This is largely due to age induced weakness, loss of vision and hearing, and other chronic problems (e.g. arthritis) that limit mobility.

This, of course, puts additional workload on family members who are able (and willing) to help them. During the acute phase of this episode, quite a bit of my spare time is involved with assisting them in various ways, but since I am a working adult with other commitments on my time, I will need assistance and load sharing from other family members, along with professional services. We’ll see how this goes.

It will definitely impact the frequency at which I make entries. (The ultimate in “who cares”.)

And then I asked Him, “Lord, why is there only one set of footprints?” And He answered, “Because that is when I hurled you for ingratitude.” WernerTwertzog
